Veterans Enhanced Transportation Service (VETS)

“Without this program, I would probably not be alive today.” ~From a VETS client

The Veterans Enhanced Transportation Service (VETS) program is a partnership between Volunteer Prince William and the Prince William Area Agency on Aging, established in 2014.  VETS provides transportation assistance for local veterans and/or their spouses with no other means of accessing local necessary medical services.  Rides for other needs such as grocery shopping, senior center, barber/hairdresser, etc. are also available to clients.  Clients are screened by Prince William Area Agency on Aging before being referred to VETS.  All clients must be able to walk from their home to a vehicle.  While a cane or walker works, the program is unable to accept clients who are confined to a wheelchair.

You can be a part of this program which provided over 900 rides to nearly 100 clients in FY24!  Volunteers are always needed to provide rides for VETS clients, primarily on weekdays between 8am and 4pm.  Duties include picking up the client at their home, providing transportation to their appointment then returning the client home, making sure the client is safely in their residence before the volunteer leaves.

Criteria:

·      Must be at least 21 years old

·      Must successfully complete both criminal background and driving record checks

·      Possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License

·      Must have a vehicle liability insurance policy, meeting minimum liability limits set by the Virginia State Corporation Commission Bureau of Insurance

As a driver, you’ll feel fabulous knowing you’re providing a ride, a friendly face and making new friends with this older generation!  Many of the clients have remarked how much they enjoy the social interaction with our volunteers and the chance to share their stories and life experiences with a friendly face.  Not only will you be providing a ride and friendship, in some cases, you’ll be saving a life!
